Liverpool have confirmed that defender Martin Skrtel faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking a metatarsal in his right foot.

The Slovakian was stretchered off during Liverpools 4-1 aggregate victory over Romanian side Unirea Urziceni in the Europa League on Thursday.

Skrtel clashed with Antonio Semedo in the second half and Reds boss Rafael Benitez admitted he was unaware how long the 25-year-old will be out for.

He said: „He’s had X-rays and they confirmed he has a broken metatarsal. We have to check over the next couple of days how long it will take to recover.”
