Defender Martin Skrtel will miss Liverpool’s home clash with Blackburn on Sunday after Rafa Benitez confirmed he has broken his foot.

The Slovakian centre-back suffered the injury during Thursday night’s 3-1 Europa League last-32 second leg victory over Romanians Unirea Urziceni, which helped the Reds reach the last 16 of the competition.

Reds boss Benitez has now confirmed their worst fears that Skrtel has fractured a metatarsal in his right foot.

He said: „We were really disappointed after the game because it was a good result but then we had the bad news about Martin.

„He’s had x-rays today and they confirmed he has a broken metatarsal.

Skrtel’s absence leaves Benitez short at the back as fellow centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos is absent as he serves the final game of a three-match suspension.

Therefore, Jamie Carragher is set to revert to his usual role in the centre which will allow Philipp Degen or youngster Martin Kelly to come in at right-back given that Glen Johnson is not yet fully over a knee problem.

Benitez can also recall Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez to the squad as he was ineligible for the trip to Romania.
