David Ngog saved Liverpool’s blushes as they claimed a 1-0 Europa League win over Unirea Urziceni on Thursday.

The Reds had failed to break through a resolute Unirea rearguard for the majority of their last 32 first leg clash at Anfield before Fernando Torres’ understudy Ngog headed an 81st minute goal to give the Merseysiders a slender lead going into the second leg in Romania.

Rafael Benitez, who had named a strong starting XI despite a crucial Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday, had substitutes Ryan Babel and Daniel Pacheco to thank after the pair combined before Pacheco set up Ngog to bail out his side.

The victory was only Liverpool’s third in nine European fixtures since they hammered Real Madrid 4-0 in the last 16 of the Champions League 11 months ago – a disappointing run which contributed to their exit from Europe’s elite-level competition in December.
