PARIS – Thales has a contract to deliver eight self-protection systems for the EC725 Caracal combat search-and-rescue helicopter, the French defense systems company said Feb. 4.
The Caracal is the first helicopter operated by the French military to carry a full self-protection suite, intended to protect crews from a range of threats, notably surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles, the company said in a statement.
Thales signed the self-protection contract with the Direction Générale pour l’Armement (DGA) procurement office last autumn, a company spokeswoman said. No financial details were available.
Under the deal, Thales will supply and integrate the Sherloc-SF radar warning receiver and MWS-20 Damien missile approach warning system. Other elements include the RALM laser-warning receiver from Selex and an ELIPS-NG flare/chaff dispenser from MBDA.
The DGA ordered five Caracals last April from Eurocopter for almost 220 million euros ($303 million) as part of a 2.4 billion euro defense stimulus package. All 19 Caracals operated by the French Army and Air Force will be equipped with the same self-protection suite, Thales said.
