Today, September 21st, State Secretary for European Affairs Bogdan Aurescu met with Susanne Kastner, Chairperson of the Bundestag Defense Committee and leader of Romanian – German Friendship Group in the German Parliament, who is on a visit to Romania on September 21 – 23, 2010.

Discussions approached topics of the bilateral agenda, the situation of the German minority in Romania, the bilateral political and economic relations, the matter of the Black Sea Region, the situation in the Republic of Moldova, other priorities of the European agenda, and aspects concerning the prospects of the NATO Summit in Lisbon, including the decision to create the NATO missile defense system.

During the talks the sides expressed appreciation of the excellent relations between the two states and reiterated the sides’ readiness to enlarge bilateral cooperation by including new joint projects, to benefit both countries. The Romanian side presented the very good outcome of the 14th Meeting of the Joint Romanian-German Governmental Committee for German Ethnics in Romania.

Bogdan Aurescu stated Romania had been and would continue to act as a constant promoter, within NATO, of the missile defense system and act with determination to see it materialize, in accordance with decisions adopted at the previous NATO Summits, in Bucharest in 2008 and in Strasbourg-Kehl in 2009.

The Romanian side expressed its crucial interest to join the Schengen Area as per established schedule, in March 2011, emphasizing Romania’s seriousness about meeting all technical requirements on schedule. It asked for the German authorities’ support in helping Romania attaining that strategic goal.
