Bulgaria’s neighbouring countries Greece and Turkey, as well as Spain, are the biggest competitors for holiday-makers who usually prefer having summer vacations in Bulgaria. This may become possible if Bulgaria increases prices in tourism sector, shows a marketing survey of the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism supported by international experts and financed by Regional Development Operational Program. As for the winter resorts, the survey shows that Bulgaria stands well as a competitor in Eastern Europe but is lagging behind Italy, Switzerland, Austria, France. A poll conducted among 9,000 foreigners shows that Bulgaria outpaces Greece, Turkey and Romania as a destination for cultural and educational, ecological, rural, SPA and wellness tourism. The participants in the poll have pointed out that poor infrastructure, congested traffic and lack of information about the specialized types of tourism are the biggest problems before Bulgaria.
