Liverpool avoided a potential Europa League embarrassment in Romania as they came from behind to beat Unirea Urziceni 3-1.

Shaky defending from set-pieces in the first half saw them fall behind to Bruno Fernandes’ header in the 19th minute.

But goals from Javier Mascherano from long range and Ryan Babel made it 2-1 on the night to Liverpool.

In the second half Steven Gerrard’s 33rd European goal made sure Liverpool could relax as they won 4-1 on aggregate.

It was the first time since the 6-1 win over Hull in September that Liverpool had scored more than twice in a game.

Brede Hangeland was the hero for Fulham as they reached the last 16 after overcoming 2009 UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk.

The defender scored and, along with goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, kept out almost everything their Ukrainian opponents could throw at them.

They did concede once on the night when Rodrigues Jadson fired Shakhtar level but they could not find the second goal that would send the tie into extra time.

Fulham had Danny Murphy sent off late on in injury time but it did not stop Fulham getting one of their best results of the season.

They drew 1-1 on the night so go through to the last 16 after a 3-2 score on aggregate.

Everton were knocked out of the Europa League after losing their second leg against Sporting Lisbon 3-0 in Portugal.

They lost 4-2 on aggregate after former Rangers midfielder Pedro Mendes scored one of the goals that knocked Everton out.
