BUCHAREST, Romania – It might have looked like French perfume, but something smelled fishy.
A Romanian official says French designer Jean Paul Gaultier is seeking damages of euro760,000 (US$1.02 million) from a Romanian company for importing thousands of bottles of fake scent.
Nicolae Fumurescu, who heads the financial police in the city of Sibiu, says 16,000 bottles of alleged Jean Paul Gaultier perfume were shipped to Romania from China.
But authorities sent samples to Paris, where the perfume was declared to be fake. Fumurescu said Monday that Gaultier is seeking damages from Agfa Trans Service Sibiu, the Romanian importer.
Lawyer Gabriel Turcu, who specializes in counterfeit cases, told the AP that Romanian police deal yearly with hundreds of similar cases.
