Nitrate control in Bulgaria has collapsed, said owner of a private accredited laboratory for ecological control of foods, Dr engineer Lazarina Gerova in an interview to FOCUS News Agency. In her words the nitrate directive of the EU is not observed in Bulgaria.

“I go every day to the exchange in Sofia living districts Slatina and Druzhba and I have seen what is going on. On the contrary, what the Regional Inspectorate for Public Health Prevention and Control (RIOKOZ) is an absolute falsification. They are issuing documents in which, when it comes to nitrates, they note they do not have the right to make an assessment whether a vegetable or fruit is save or not,” she said.

In 1999, Bulgarian standards, which have given clear assessment in a compliance with the requirements of the World Health Organization (WHO) whether a product is save have been removed.

“Now the place for assessment in an official document of RIOKOZ is replaced by “We do not have the right to make assessments,” Gerova said.

“Bulgaria has standards for nitrates in a compliance with the requirements of the WHO- I have a letter from it and I know what their requirements are. I have a letter from the Ministry of Health from 1999 we must observe their requirements and thus norm have been changed-Bulgarians have been too strict, i.e. theyh ave protected people’s health too much and have been changed. The change has been made over commercial aims,” the expect said.
