RAFA BENITEZ insists winning the Europa League would help lift the gloom after a tough season at Liverpool.

The competition has plenty of critics and is seen as an anti-climax by the Kop after their disappointing exit from the Champions League.

The Reds go to Romania to face Unirea Urziceni tomorrow hoping to improve on a desperately poor first leg and 0-0 stalemate at Manchester City.

But Benitez, along with some members of his squad, has won this trophy before under its former guise as the UEFA Cup and he insists it would be a feather in their caps.

He said: „We know it has not been a good season, but all teams go through periods like this.

„When you win a European competition it is always very important. Stevie Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have that experience, also it is something I know from Valencia.

Liverpool won the Anfield leg 1-0 and Benitez said: „The attitude of the players has been fantastic. It was massive to see the way they reacted to going out of the Champions League.”
