Rafa Benitez will be hoping that Jamie Carragher recovers from a groin injury in time for Liverpool’s trip to Man City next Sunday.

The Reds boss will give the 32-year-old former England international all the time he needs to overcome the slight tweak that forced him off during Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat at Arsenal, ahead of the huge Premier League showdown at Eastlands.

Carragher is almost certain to miss Thursday’s Europa League clash with Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni at Anfield so Benitez can focus on getting him back in time for the City match as the two sides scrap it out for the fourth Champions League spot this season.

In the meantime Sotirios Kyrgiakos could face Unirea, despite him currently serving a three-match domestic ban following his sending off against Everton, in place of makeshift right-back Carragher. Benitez also has Philipp Degen or youngster Martin Kelly at his disposal and whoever comes in could stay there at City if they impress and Carragher fails to make it.

Benitez could be boosted by the return of 12-goal top scorer Fernando Torres, who is stepping up his rehabilitation at Melwood after suffering a knee injury in the FA Cup defeat to Reading a month ago. However he has stressed that he will not rush his fellow Spaniard back into action and run the risk of doing more damage.
