Officers with Romanian directorate for combating organized crime and terrorism and masked officers with the special units of the gendarmerie executed on Wednesday morning check-ups on the homes of criminals dealing with smuggling of cigarettes, bought from the duty-free shops, the online edition of Romanian Adevarul newspaper reports.

Authorities searched the homes of cigarette traffickers in the town of Timisoara and Dumbravica, as the special action was coordinated from Bucharest police.

Police had information about several storehouses for tobacco products without excise label, the newspaper says.

The police action comes only a couple of weeks after police officers from Timis confiscated illegal cigarettes worth EUR 200,000, Adevarul reminds.
