Bucharest, Romania (CNN) – A military plane has crashed near the Tuzla Romania Airport near the Black Sea with four Air Force crew members and nine Navy paratroopers on board, according to a statement from the Romanian Ministry of Defense Monday.
The crash killed 10 people and injured three more, the statement said.
Shortly after takeoff around 5:40 p.m. local time, the Antonov 2 plane suddenly lost altitude and hit the ground, bursting into flames.
The plane belonged to the Romanian Air Force School in Boboc and took off from the Tuzla airfield for a regular training flight.
The survivors have been recovered and taken to the hospital, said a ministry spokesman.
The statement said the Minister of National Defense has appointed a commission to investigate the incident, and he and the chief of general staff express their deepest sorrow for the loss of the troops and conveyed their condolences to the grieving families, the statement said.
