TIMISOARA, Romania – Authorities in Romania say seven people, including a local official, have been detained and accused of smuggling cigarettes from neighboring Serbia.
Border police spokesman Ciprian Gaic says four members of the group have been caught smuggling 18,000 packs of cigarettes by horse and cart.
Gaic said Tuesday that a local official from the town of Deta was also detained. Zoran Vertopan is suspected to have led the smuggling ring.
The town’s mayor, Petru Roman, said Vertopan is a member of the governing Democratic Liberal Party.
Cigarette smuggling has sharply increased in Romania since the government levied extra taxes on tobacco last year. Tobacco companies claim one in three cigarettes is counterfeit or smuggled.
