Romanian lawmakers have condemned the process of expelling Roma gypsies by French government, accusing Paris of „serious violation” of EU regulations and human rights.

The expulsion of Roma from France violates „the right of free movement for all European citizens regardless of nationality or race,” the legislators said in a statement on Wednesday.

Over 1,000 Roma gypsies have been expelled from France since July. Despite the criticism against the move, the French government has declared that the crackdown on camps will not stop.

They also praised the European Parliament for criticizing the French clampdown on Roma gypsies.

Romania has the largest Roma population in the EU, followed by Bulgaria.

The European Parliament, the Catholic Church and editorials in newspapers such as Le Monde, the Financial Times and the New York Times have censured France over the Roma expulsion.

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding has said that the dismantling of Roma camps in France is similar to events during World War II.
