Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has been ruled out until the end of February after twisting his knee in the FA Cup defeat to Reading on Wednesday night.
The Spaniard, who underwent scans today, has torn cartilage in his right knee, which rules him out for the next six weeks – including potentially crucial Premier League games at Arsenal and Manchester City and the Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield.
Rafa Benitez will also be without Torres for both legs of the first knockout round of the Europa League against Romanian side Unirea Urziceni.
There was also bad news on two of the club’s other top players, with Steven Gerrard and winger Yossi Benayoun both out until the beginning of next month.
All three players were injured during the 2-1 reverse against the Royals at Anfield, with Gerrard suffering a hamstring strain that will keep him out for two weeks and Benayoun fracturing a rib.
The Israeli international will be unavailable for „between three and four weeks” a club spokesman confirmed.
