Steaua Bucharest have confirmed that they’ve appointed former Romanian international Ilie Dumitrescu as their new head coach. Steaua had initially set their sights on signing Gheorghe Hagi, but he was not interested, thus prompting the club to turn their attention elsewhere.
Dumitrescu has nearly a decade’s coaching experience in Romania, Cyprus and Greece and takes over at the club where he began and ended his lengthy playing career.
Steaua were in the market for a new coach because of the departure of Victor Piturca earlier this week. Piturca opted to resign as the Bucharest side’s head coach after only 59 days in charge.
According to club president Gigi Becali, Dumitrescu just wants a symbolic payment of €0,23 to take the helm.
„He (Dumitrescu) will not be my employee. He does not want the club’s money. He told me simply – ‘I am coming but money does not interest me. I just want respect,'” Becali told broadcaster
